The legislation calls for all meat and poultry raised, processed and sold in Maryland to bear a label identifying which antibiotics the animals consumed. A sister bill would seek to restrict use of antimicrobial drugs in food-producing animals. The bills will be discussed during a hearing Tuesday by the Senate Education, Health and Environmental Affairs Committee. “This is a public health issue,” said Sen. Karen S. Montgomery, D-Montgomery, who proposed the legislation. “There is a big problem right now with increasing antibiotic resistance.” Some medical professionals and environmentalists have long warned that overuse of antibiotics on farm animals to speed their growth led to the rise of antibiotic-resistant bacteria and decreased the effectiveness of antibiotics.... 原文 Link to article
